1963年6月16日出生於美國芝加哥的一個音樂世家。1982年，他曾錄製了幾首歌曲，試著寄給樂壇知名巨星Lionel Richie，意外的立即被賞識，並被Richie邀請加盟伴唱。

1987年，推出了第一張單曲唱片Don't Mean Nothing。唱片一經出版，迅速登上了美國熱門歌曲排行榜第三名的位置，Richard Marx 因此一舉成名。

1987年5月，第一部個人專輯Richard Marx問世。

其中的單曲持續回歸Keep Coming Back首先名列排行榜首。接著，專輯中的另外三首單曲Hold on Tonight、Don't Mean Nothing、Should've Known Better接踵登上了冠軍寶座，其中Should've Known Better這首歌表達了珍惜生命的主旨，Richard Marx將所得版稅收入捐給了在紐約大學兒科診療室就診的一位患癌症的小女孩。

在巡迴演出的同時，著手推出第二部專輯Repeat Offender重犯，並下定決心要超越第一部專輯。Richard Marx後來回憶說：「在巡迴演出時，我一共創作了30首歌曲。每晚散場以後，我一回到住所，就馬上拿出錄音機，開始寫歌。」

1988年1月30日，推出了Endless Summer Nights夏夜漫漫。同年6月11日，又推出了Hold on Tonight留住今夜。此後，他即開始了長達14個月的環球巡迴獻演。

1989年5月，翻錄製作了重犯專輯的新版本，其中的兩首單曲Satistied和Right Here Waiting都成為排行榜冠軍歌曲。隨後，他的歌曲安琪麗亞Angelia、稱心如意Satisfied和此情可待Right Here Waiting也大獲成功，其中後二首均排行榜首。

1989年春天，在第二次國際巡迴演出中，Richard Marx邀約了Tina Turner到德國共同獻藝。在巡迴演出的日子裡，他創作了30首作品，除了創作自己的歌曲之外，也為其他歌手寫歌或作唱片製作人，如Vixen的EdgeOf A Broren Heart、Poco的Nothing To Hide。

1990年9月11日，為初生的愛子寫了一首新歌：你的世界Your World。

1991年9月9日，舉辦了令人難以置信的音樂會，一天之中，他飛行在紐約、華盛頓、克裡弗蘭、芝加哥和洛杉磯五大城市間作馬拉松式的巡迴演出。後來，這天被稱為「理查德日」而載入史冊。
