然而這首歌的誕生，卻是源自約翰藍儂日籍妻子小野洋子一九六三年的手札："Imagine the clouds dripping. Dig a hole in your garden to put them in."。洋子回憶說，這幾句話對建構多元性的未來提出了概念性的建議，啟發了藍儂諸多靈感。於是，藍儂就在倫敦郊外的住所臥室內寫出了"Imagine"，並在家中的錄音室彈著鋼琴錄下了這首歌。後來，藍儂邀請著名的 Phil Spector 擔任製作人，Phil Spector原本打算在編曲中加入管絃樂，但兩人交換意見之後，決定採用最簡單的形式呈現。
