Dr. Hook在1968年於紐澤西成軍，當時，樂團的創始團員-主唱Ray Sawyer、Dennis Locorriere、鍵盤手Bill Francis、鼓手Popeye Phillips、吉他手George Cummings準備在紐澤西的Union City的一家club開唱，由於club老闆急於要幫這支駐唱樂團做廣告，需要樂團的名稱，George在情急之下，看看頂著牛仔帽，戴著一副眼罩的Ray，George覺得Ray的這身打扮像極了童話故事「小飛俠彼得潘」中的Captain Hook（虎克船長），索性就將樂團就取名為Dr. Hook & The Medicine Show。1971年，電影「Who Is Harry Kellerman And Why Is He Saying Those Terrible Things About Me?」的音樂總監Ron Haffkine碰巧聽到Dr. Hook & The Medicine Show樂團的試唱帶，Ron認為該團是演唱詞曲創作家/作家/幽默大師/卡通創作者Shel Silverstein為這部電影所譜寫的歌曲的絕佳首選，樂團在灌錄了Shel Silverstein的電影歌曲後，雙方也成了莫逆之交，Shel幫樂團打造了The Cover Of The Rolling Stone、Sylvia’s Mother等TOP10單曲，而負責為雙方牽線的Ron最後成了樂團的唱片製作人。雖然擁有兩首暢銷單曲，但是，樂團在走紅沒多久就遭遇一些低潮，還有成員的異動，直到1975年，樂團將團名縮短為Dr. Hook，選擇以Capitol唱片公司重新出發後，才以翻唱Sam Cooke的名曲Only Sixteen一掃陰霾。在接下來的四年裡，Dr. Hook變成了排行榜上的常勝軍。他們的音樂兼具了輕鬆、風趣與純樸、憨厚的性格，也是1970年代少數能同時有單曲打進全美熱門單曲榜與鄉村單曲榜的樂團。(以上資料來自博客來音樂館)
