許多事情都有正反兩面不同的評價，藝人與他們的作品也是一樣。曾經走紅於70年代中期到80年代中期的實力派女歌手梅莉莎曼契斯特（Melissa Manchester），雖然創作的才華與歌唱的技巧受到不少推崇，批評她庸俗的也大有人在。這位創作女歌手來自紐約，出生於1951年二月，父親是紐約大都會歌劇院管弦樂團的樂手，而她從十五歲就開始唱廣告歌，並且在就讀表演藝術學校的期間成為一家著名樂曲出版公司聘僱的專屬歌曲作家。後來，她進入紐約大學，隨著保羅賽門（Paul Simon）磨練歌曲寫作的技巧，畢業之後進軍歌壇，在一些俱樂部賣唱，被蓓蒂蜜勒（Bette Midler）與貝瑞曼尼洛（Barry Manilow）發掘，在1971年雇用她當合音歌手。

1973年，MM推出首張個人專輯「Home to Myself」，其中有不少歌曲都是與著名的女性歌曲作家卡洛貝耶莎格（Carole Bayer Sager）合作譜寫的，可惜成績平平，到了1975年的第二張專輯「Melissa」，終於以「Midnight Blue」首度打進排行前十名，就此開始以MOR的路線，唱出好些表現直接、製作華麗的歌曲而著名。1976年，她與肯尼羅根斯（Kenny Loggins）合作譜寫了造成轟動的「Whenever I Call You Friend」，接著又唱紅了她的招牌名曲「Don't Cry Out Loud」。1980年，她甚至以「I'll Never Say Goodbye」和「Through the Eyes of Love」同時獲得提名而成為頭一個有兩首歌曲入圍奧斯卡最佳電影歌曲金像獎的歌手。1982年，MM發表了「Hey Ricky」專輯，除了其中的「You Should Hear How She Talks About You」為她奪下最佳流行女歌手的葛萊美獎，她還翻唱了當時剛剛榮獲奧斯卡最佳電影配樂金像獎的電影「火戰車」（Chariots of Fire）主題曲。(以上資料來自銀河網路)
