洛史都華 1945 年 1 月 10 日出生於倫敦，卻始終以蘇格蘭血統為傲。成為歌手之前曾做過許多工作，包括築籬笆工人與加入職業足球隊，後來雖然退出當不成職業球員，但洛對此運動一直保持高度興趣，後來踢足球進觀眾席送給樂迷也是他後來演唱會的噱頭之一。
接著洛史都華旅行於歐洲，在西班牙期間向民謠歌者 Wizz Jones 學習口琴，回國後又學習吉他並且先後加入一些藍調團體擔任主唱或以個人身份錄製歌曲，可惜都不甚成功。英國三大搖滾吉他手之一的 Jeff Beck 脫離 Yardbirds 合唱團之後自行組成 Jeff Beck Group ( 以下簡稱 JBG )，1967 年洛史都華加入，在兩張專輯「Truth」( 1968 )、「Beck-Ola」( 1969 ) 裡擔任主唱，此兩張專輯的成功連帶使洛史都華拿到了出個人專輯的合約。
1969 年 Jeff 要解雇貝斯手 Ron Wood，身為 Ron 好友的 Rod ( 兩人長得也很像 ) 便與之一起離開 JBG。此時英倫時尚與不羈搖滾樂團 Small Faces 吉他手 Steve Marriott 棄團與 Peter Frampton 另組 Humble Pie，其餘團員正在找尋替代人選，於是朗和洛在1969年雙雙加入，由 Ron 擔任吉他、Rod 自然是主唱，團名簡稱為 Faces 繼續闖蕩搖滾樂壇，直到 1975 年才解散。
洛史都華一方面在 Faces 合唱團擔任主唱，另一方面個人演唱事業正式起飛，1969、1970 年分別發表首張專輯「感念舊人」( 在美國發行時標題為「The Rod Stewart Album」) 和第二張專輯《Gasoline Alley》，而 1971 年 Rod 終於以一首《Maggie May》以及專輯《Every Picture Tells A Story》征服大西洋兩岸。
1972 年 Rod 的第四張專輯《Never A Dull Moment》仍然維持前作的熱力，《You Wear It Well》是其中暢銷曲。洛史都華早期時髦的裝扮及似乎被踩著喉嚨唱歌的破鑼嗓子都是他的註冊商標，為配合當時造型也曾拍過「Rod The Mod」的短片，這個「摩登的洛」也成為他的外號之一。接下來由於 Rod 與 Faces 分屬兩個公司，於是唱片合約問題開始浮上檯面。1973 年 Rod 沒有新作發行，只推出《Sing It Again Rod》精選，但是其中收錄了 Rod 參加【Tommy】音樂劇倫敦版本演出時所唱的《Pinball Wizard》。
1974 年《Smiler》發行，不過 Rod 與 Ron 因為個人專輯發行心結日深，影響到往後 Faces 團體的存在。1969-74 年間洛史都華的個人專輯都由Mercury唱片公司發行，這些專輯參與伴奏樂手許多都是 Faces 的團員，此時期的作品大都以民謠加搖滾、黑人靈魂歌曲為主，得到評價也都相當高。1976 年所出的兩張一套精選是針對此一時期的歌曲作整理，ＣＤ版問世後還以搖滾、抒情兩張分開銷售。
1975 年對洛史都華而言是個嶄新的開始：移居美國籌備新專輯的錄音，加入新東家華納唱片，正式離開 Faces 全心拓展個人事業。專輯《Atlantic Crossing》在八月發行，由唱片標題反應出 Rod 隻身來到美國以全新伴奏陣容完成此作；專輯唱片按ＡＢ面分為快、慢歌兩部份，據說這是他當時的愛人—瑞典女演員 Britt Ekland 的建議，結果反應熱烈，洛史都華再展多采多姿的搖滾巨星風采。專輯中《I Don't Wanna Talk About It》和《Sailing》都是台灣聽眾非常熟悉且一再傳誦的兩首抒情佳作。
1976 年洛史都華發行《A Night On The Town》專輯，歌曲還是分成慢、快歌兩部份，但這次把 Rod 最擅長的慢版情歌擺在前半，開場曲就是 Billboard 單曲榜八週冠軍《Tonight's The Night》，歌曲結束前有段 Britt Ekland 法語的呢喃，讓整首歌更增纏綿之意。《The First Cut Is The Deepest》是同樣來自倫敦的民謠歌手 Cat Stevens 之作。1977 年的專輯《Foot Loose And Fancy Free》錄製時正是 Rod 感情低潮期，他與 Britt 分手的傷痛似乎都寄情歌中無論自寫的《You're In My Heart》或翻唱《You Keep Me Hanging On》、《( If Loving You Is Wrong ) I Don't Want To Be Right》都像是對 Britt 的念念不忘 ( 也許這張標題才該叫做「感念舊人」)。
專輯《Blondes Have More Fun》發行於 1978 年耶誕節前夕並持續熱賣到 1979 年，為洛史都華整個七○年代的表現劃下完美句點。迪斯可舞曲《Da Ya Think I'm Sexy》是歷年來華納唱片公司銷售最快的單曲之一，它不僅得到冠軍，也是暢銷兩百萬的白金單曲。
說起洛史都華倒還有一項令人嫉妒、瞠目結舌的本事：那就是拍拖的對象一定要選當紅的名模或名媛，於是「花公雞」的外號不脛而走；1979 年 Rod 花花公子的生活宣告結束，嬌妻是影星喬治漢米頓的前妻 Alana，然而這段戀曲終究在 1984 年還是以離婚收場。
八○年代的洛史都華徘徊在流行、搖滾間，一直尋找適合自己的新方向，追隨潮流之下單曲時有佳作。1980 出版的「Foolish Behaviour」專輯雖然樂手延續 1977 年以來的伴奏陣容，且自上張專輯就多與 Rod 一起寫曲但普遍評價都不高。究其原因不外乎當時英倫新浪潮音樂如火如荼蔓延而 Rod 的音樂卻停留原地，還好美國方面對《Passion》仍然喜愛。Rod 1981 年選自《Tonight I'm Yours》輕快的暢銷曲《Young Turks》再度受到英美兩地的青睞，此曲在台灣異常走紅，因當時國內女歌手比莉翻唱為《青春、陽光、歡笑》，大街小巷、排行合輯的唱片幾乎每張都收錄這一首—無論翻唱還是原曲。
洛史都華不僅唱片銷售佳，現場演唱會更是魅力四射，在台上彷彿有著無窮的精力，1982 年的「現場演唱專輯」( Absolutely Live ) 就是幾場演唱會的記實。1983 年的《Body Wishes》從封面 Rod 的紅黑塑膠服裝到音樂節奏採用電子鼓都已經被新浪潮所影響，《Baby Jane》在英國重新拿到暌違五年的單曲排行冠軍，《What Am I Gonna Do》也是暢銷曲，不過美國方面對 Rod 這麼大的轉變反應倒有點錯愕。洛史都華從加入華納唱片之後的專輯製作人一直都是 Tom Dowd，在他製作下最能表現 Rod 對每首歌的掌握；《Tonight I'm Yours》是 Rod 和團員自行製作的專輯，《Body Wishes》除了 Rod 本人外再找回 Tom Dowd 還有當時紅及一時的 Jimmy Iovine，所以該專輯風格多變。延續上張成功的模式 1984 年專輯《Camouflage》加重搖滾力道果然美國市場再度接受《Infatuation》、《Some Guys Have All The Luck》。
1984-85 年間 Rod 與分開十多年的老同事 Jeff Beck 積極合作成為當時一個新聞焦點，在 Jeff 葛萊美獲獎專輯「Flash」中 Rod 演唱《People Get Ready》還曾發行過單曲。1986 年 Rod 為【法網神鷹】所唱的《Love Touch》成為他第一首暢銷的電影主題曲，不過這可不是洛史都華第一次為電影跨刀演唱，1982 年他為麥可基頓主演的電影【Night Shift】所唱《That's What Friends Are For》在四年後被狄昂．華薇克唱紅。在臺灣知名老牌ＤＪ余光先生的強力放送和台灣代理公司大作宣傳之下洛史都華在本地人氣始終居高不下，這可由《Every Beat Of My Heart》在本地比美國暢銷可以看出；收錄這首單曲的同名專輯於 1986 年發行 ( 美國發行時標題簡單稱為「Rod Stewart」)，英國還是很支持這位國寶級歌手，除專輯同名曲外《Love Touch》亦收錄於此；很可惜《That's What Friends Are For》卻只能在電影原聲帶裡找到，沒有包括在洛史都華的任何專輯或精選裡。
1988 年由 Rod、Duran Duran 合唱團吉他手 Andy Taylor 和 Chic 合唱團貝斯手 Bernard Edwards 共同製作的《Out Of Order》專輯在美國異常受歡迎其中共發行四首單曲，對 Rod 而言是前所未有。1989 年 12 月闖蕩樂壇廿五年的洛發行了四張ＣＤ的套裝精選，這是包含他個人與最早期樂團時期的全記錄，因此英文標題為「Storyteller／The Complete Anthology 1964-1990」，對洛史都華長久以來的超級樂迷而言這套全記錄可是必備寶典 ( 不過還是沒有《That's What Friends Are For》)，也是 Rod 對自己四分之一世紀來的奮鬥做了最忠實的回顧。
洛史都華翻唱他人作品從民謠到黑人靈魂堪稱一絕，有時保留原味，有時唱出自己獨特風格，且在專輯中他常會安排一、兩首此類歌曲。1989 年翻唱特立獨行酒館歌手 Tom Waits 的《Downtown Train》成為他所有翻唱曲中商業成績最佳的典範。它原先收錄在上述套裝全記錄中，後來以此為主打發行單曲再從套裝精選萃取另十一首歌濃縮為「城市列車 —三十年十二首名曲精選輯」上市。
《Vagabond Heart》發行於 1991 年，這張專輯有著明顯節奏藍調味，像兩首單曲《It Takes Two》、《The Motown Song》前者找來大名鼎鼎 Tina Turner 合唱、後者由黑人靈魂傳奇團體 Temptations幕後和聲，如此用心改變音樂方向也證明九○年代的洛史都華仍寶刀未老。1992 年重唱 Elton John 的《Your Song》獻給 1991 年 11 月 24 日因愛滋病去世的皇后合唱團主唱 Freddie Mercury。《Downtown Train》商業上成功使他再接再厲翻唱嗓音相近的 Van Morrison 的情歌《Have I Told You Lately》，原先是「漂泊的心」專輯中歌曲沒在美國發單曲只上過點播榜。
1993 年２月洛史都華前往洛杉磯參加 MTV 台舉辦的不插電現場演唱會，又重唱一次《Have I Told You Lately》，結果感人的情歌果真帶動這張「MTV 傳真--現場原音演唱會專輯」( Unplugged…And Seated ) 的暢銷；難得的是這場演唱會特別來賓居然是 Rod 久未合作的昔日好友、自 Faces 解散後即加入滾石合唱團至今的 Ron Wood；至於其他伴奏樂手 Rod 也情商以前 Rod Stewart Band 的搭檔重聚一堂。同年英國發行 ( 台灣也曾發行過 ) 一張名為《Lead Vocalist》的專輯，這是選取 Rod 在 JBG 和 Faces 時期的舊作加上幾首新的翻唱曲而成的精選，Tom Waits 的《Tom Traubert's Blues》、滾石合唱團的《Ruby Tuesday》重唱版都出自此一精選。
1993 年底流行樂三位當紅男歌手 Bryan Adams、Sting、Rod Stewart 為電影【豪情三劍客】( The Three Musketeers ) 合唱頌揚愛情的《All For Love》，可以想見一定又是首大熱門。1995 年問世的作品《A Spanner In The Works》從翻唱 Chris Rea、Bob Dylan、Tom Petty、Tom Waits 的歌看得出 Rod 試圖走回流行搖滾、民謠、靈魂老路，其中當然也不忘詮釋他最喜歡的黑人歌手 Sam Cooke 作曲的《Soothe Me》。1996年 Rod 沒有新專輯但是灌錄四首新歌：標題新曲《If We Fall In Love Tonight》、電影【一日鍾情】主題曲《For The First Time》( 電影裡是肯尼羅根斯的版本 )、七○年代老歌《When I Need You》、《Sometimes When We Touch》加上十二首自己的經典情歌合成「愛在今夜—１６首超級情歌精選」( If WE Fall In Love Tonight )，情歌在台灣一向深受喜愛，所以這張精選在本地屬長賣型專輯。
洛史都華 1998 年專輯《When WE Were The New Boys》翻唱了兩首歌《Cigarettes And Alcohol》、《Rocks》，它們分別來自九○年代英倫搖滾首席樂團—Oasis 以及融合搖滾與電子樂之原始呐喊合唱團 ( Primal Scream )，這項新嘗試顯示落得音樂不斷包容和成長。
洛史都華邁入廿一世紀的專輯《Human》固然仍以節奏藍調為主軸，但由瑪丹娜、席琳狄翁、雪兒專輯製作群卻帶給樂迷全新感受。最新消息傳出洛史都華離開合作超過廿五年的華納唱片加入成立不久的Ｊ唱片公司，不知道他未來的音樂方向會有何突破。不過這位於 1989 年獲得葛萊美傳奇人物獎、1994 年入主搖滾名人殿堂的搖滾鐵公雞必將以充沛的活力及越見精純的歌藝維持他輝煌的音樂記錄。(以上資料來自天空http://blog.yam.com/rockoe/article/9145572)
