Aaliyah 1979年1月16日生於美國紐約市的布魯克林區，12歲時，在叔叔的幫助下與Blackground Records簽約，並與R&B歌手R. Kelly相識。此後Kelly開始為她創作並製作歌曲，在與Kelly合作之下，1994年15歲的Aaliyah發行了個人首張專輯「Age Ain't Nothing But a Number」，此後傳出了艾莉婭與年長10歲的Kelly秘密結婚的傳聞，但當事人雙方一直否認這個說法。1996年，Aaliyah轉與Atlantic Records簽約，並於同年發表她的第二張專輯「One in a Million」，在全球則創下了超過八百萬張的銷量。此後Aaliyah進入底特律表演藝術高中學習戲劇，並從1997年開始了她的演員生涯，國人較熟悉得是她與李連杰演對手戲的影片《致命羅密歐》，她還為這部電影貢獻了四首歌曲，包括獲得Billboard Hot 100排行榜第一名的單曲 Try Again。2001年7月，Aaliyah發行了她的第三張專輯——同名專輯「Aaliyah」，其中幾首最成功的歌曲仍然由Timbaland監製。該專輯獲得了極佳的評論，在Billboard 200排行榜上取得了第二名的成績，發行後第一周銷量就達187,000張。
