她玩的是簡單而純粹的搖滾樂，她從不把自己的性別當一回事，她是幾代搖滾女性的偶像。

　　Jett 的音樂最明顯的標誌就是雪崩一樣的音量和無法抵抗的鉤子( 指音樂中引人入勝的細節 )，the Rolling Stones 一樣精力充沛的形象和節奏，AC／DC 一樣強大的和絃演奏。她堅持搖滾樂的傳統，但也不斷有所突破──她玩的是經典的三和弦 rock & roll，然而她也喜歡某些被認為是垃圾的東西 ( 比如 Gary Glitter )。從她的第一支樂團 the Runaways 到她在八○年代的金曲機器合作者 the Blackhearts 直至她在九○年代出人意料的成功復出，她的音樂從未改變過，她用這種方式保證音樂的品質，並用這種方式創造了經典 ( 《I Love Rock-n-Roll》 )。

　　Joan Jett 原名 Joan Larkin，１５歲便成立了自己的第一支樂團，並為人們演出。洛杉磯的一個製作人 Kim Fowley 發現了 Joan Jett 的樂團，於是他主動擔任了樂團的經紀人，在將這支全部由女性組成的樂團改名為 the Runaways 後，樂隊團簽約於 Mercury 唱片公司。樂團最初的三張專輯在美國基本沒有什麼太大商業成就，但在日本卻大受歡迎，而且有趣的是，在洛杉磯的龐克圈和硬搖滾圈中她都十分吃香，她在這種狀況下為 Hard Core 樂團 the Germs 製作了他們的第一張專輯《G.I.》。

　　1980 年 the Runaways 解散，Jett 來到紐約開始個人發展。在經紀人兼製作人 Kenny Laguna 的協助下，Jett 獨立發行了以她自己的名字命名的個人專輯，因為沒有唱片公司對她感興趣。這張唱片和比較龐克化的 Runaways 相比是一張相當傳統的 rock & roll 唱片，但卻保持了以前那種挑釁性的態度。唱片的銷售結果對於獨立發行來講相當不錯，這引起了 Boardwalk 唱片公司的注意，他們以《Bad Reputation》之名再版了這張專輯，最終在美國專輯榜上名列第５１。

　　在《Bad Reputation》發行後 Jett 成立了 the Blackhearts 樂團，1981年，Jett 以『Joan Jett & The Blackhearts』之名推出了第二張專輯《I Love Rock-n-Roll》，這是她的輝煌時刻，也是八○年代重搖滾的開場白，專輯名列 Top10，單曲《I Love Rock-n-Roll》成為一代搖滾禮讚。但其後的一系列專輯再也未能取得如此的佳績，也再沒有一首單曲能與《I Love Rock-n-Roll》媲美。1987 年 Jett 在電影《Light of Day》中擔任主演。1988 年，取自專輯《Up Your Alley》的單曲《I Hate Myself for Loving You》終於再次打入 Top10，專輯也成為了她的第二張白金唱片。1990 年的精選《The Hit List》成績還算理想，但 1991 年的專輯《Notorious》則在榜上徹底失敗。但在此時，在《Notorious》和 1994 的《Pure and Simple》之間，新一代女性搖滾藝人開始崛起，從重型非主流樂團Ｌ７到 Riot Grrl 龐克樂團 Bikini Kill 的每一個人都宣稱受到了 Jett 與 the Runaways 的影響，其結果是《Pure and Simple》引起了人們的極大興趣，自八○年代中期後，評論界從未像對這張專輯一樣表示過熱情。1995 年，Jett 與 the Gits ( 這支樂團的主唱 Mia Zapata 1993 年遇害 ) 的殘餘成員錄製了一張現場專輯《Evilstig》。1999 年，Jett 重組了 the Blackhearts 並錄製了專輯《Fetish》。(以上資料來自Oriental Express 搖滾部落)
