Donna Summer絕對是二十世紀流行音樂史上最具代表性的聲音之一。
在歌壇從事創作及演唱工作二十餘年，Donna Summer對於流行樂界的歌手及歌迷而言，仍是極其重要的影響和啟發者 舉個例子來說，她1977年的Top 10單曲「I Feel Love」到了1995年10月，又打進了Billboard舞曲榜Top 10席次；這首歌曲在Donna重新於倫敦配唱、Rollo and Sister Bliss重新為其混音之後，拿下了五週全英舞曲榜冠軍，並成為全英流行榜Top 5單曲。
除了演藝事業上的璀璨成就，Donna Summer還是位視覺藝術家，她的作品曾於紐約、洛杉磯、芝加哥、納許維爾、還有邁阿密等地展出過；1999年，Donna Summer還在名導演史帝芬史匹伯（Steven Spielberg）的贊助之下，於日本舉行個展。
Donna Summer的故事開始於一個除夕夜，原名Donna Adrian Gaines的她於波士頓道契斯特（Dorchester）區出生，因為很早就對音樂產生濃厚的興趣，使得她在五個姐妹和一個兄弟間，顯得最為特別。Donna在幼時即為傳奇福音歌手Mahalia Jackson的歌迷，她在八歲時也加入了當地教會中的唱詩班，「我到那時才知道，上帝給了我一個極為特殊的天賦」Donna回憶說 問題只在於要如何以最好的方式運用它。
18歲時，Donna隻身前往紐約開創演藝事業 在通過為百老匯著名搖滾歌舞劇「Hair」中，原為Melba Moore所飾演的角色所做的試鏡之後，Donna躍上了演藝圈的焦點檯面；而透過「Hair」的經紀公司引薦，Donna被一家德國製作公司相中，在當地演出該劇一年後，她轉戰維也納，繼續在當地演出,同時那次機會讓她得以加入維也納民謠歌劇合唱團在和他們共事期間，也參加了『Showboat』和『Porgy And Bess（乞丐與蕩婦）』等劇的演出」。
後來Donna又回到德國，繼續她如日中天的音樂劇表演事業，在那段期間，她又參與了「Godspell」和「The Me Nobody Knows」的演出。值此同時，Donna也開始進入錄音室，錄製一些試聽帶 一卷演唱Three Dog Night歌曲的試帶使得她結識了Giorgio Moroder和Pete Bellotte這兩位製作人。她們三人合作的第一支單曲「Hostage」在荷蘭、法國及比利時均造成可觀的流行熱潮。之後沒多久，Donna嫁給了演員Helmut Sommor，不過最後這對銀色夫妻還是走上了分手一途。Donna保留了夫姓，並將其改為英式拼法，重新出發。當時她在歐洲創下多首暢銷單曲佳績，不過在家鄉美國，她的旋風尚未全面展開。
1975年，Donna、Bellotte和Moroder共同創造了為Donna開創新契機的歌曲「Love To Love You Baby」，當這首歌曲在法國各舞廳大受歡迎之時，美國Casablanca唱片公司總裁Neil Bogart對這首歌曲充滿了高度的期望，於是他簽下了這首單曲的發行權，並將其從原來長達16分鐘的版本剪接成七吋單曲版，這個版本迅速登上全美熱門單曲榜亞軍位置，此時Donna榮譽歸鄉的行程才剛要起飛。
「Love To Love You Baby」的成功讓Donna Summer明亮節拍中同時含括狄斯可步調、放克音樂、管絃樂鋪陳及飛揚而戲劇化歌聲的特殊音樂特色，形成美國流行樂界新風潮。喜愛重節奏的舞廳DJ偏好一些輕快的作品像是：「Spring Affair」、「Try Me（I Know We Can Make It）」、「Could It Be Magic」等等；而流行音樂電台排歌的負責人則喜愛安排「I Love You」、「MacArthur Park」、「Hot Stuff」、「Last Dance」等旋律流暢的曲目；「Last Dance」這首電影「Thank God It's Friday」的主題曲更為Donna攫獲一座奧斯卡最佳電影主題曲獎座，為她的事業再錦上添花一筆。
1980年，Donna成為David Geffen所籌組的唱片公司Geffen唱片旗下首位藝人。緊接著推出的「The Wanderer」一曲為她開創事業的另一頁新面向，之後的兩張一套專輯"I'm A Rainbow"是Donna與Giorgio Moroder和Pete Bellotte的最後合作作品，同樣地在流行樂壇上造成不小的影響 附註一點，由於這套專輯的概念和音樂語彙在當時看來有些前衛，因此一直未獲Geffen唱片正式發行。目前市面上看到的版本都是在1996年由Polygram唱片予以發行的。
接下來幾年，和Donna Summer有合作關係的創作者和製作人站出來洋洋灑灑均為頂尖人物：Quincy Jones、Michael Omartian、英國的Stock Aitken＆Waterman….等等。Donna的熱門單曲紀錄從未間斷，從活力十足的「State Of Independence」到樂迷耳熟能詳的「She Works Hard For The Money」、「This Time I Know It's For Real」，俱為流行樂壇上的寵兒。
1994年的"Endless Summer"不只是Donna Summer歷年代表作的回顧精選，更是研習流行音樂史的學生的最佳範本教材。這張精選輯裡也收錄了幾首全新作品，其中「Melody Of Love」一曲更獲當年Billboard雜誌所統計的全年度最受歡迎舞曲唱片第一名。1994年年底問市、頗受樂評推崇的"Christmas Spirit"收錄的是一些經典聖誕歌曲，以及Donna自己所譜寫、與納許維爾交響樂團共同演出的幾首歌曲。
1995年，Donna在美國及巴西做了幾場極為成功的演唱會，這幾場演唱會不但在票房數字上創下長紅，更再度獲致樂評們的連連讚賞這番佳績使得Donna的巡迴演出欲罷不能，一路加唱到1996年，每場演出都是水準之作。正如洛杉磯時報樂評Robert Hilburn在1995年Donna於環球劇場所做的一場精彩演出後所寫下的評語：「Donna Summer這個名字是70年代末流行樂壇的指南針，她創造出了那段期間最具吸引力、精雕細琢中帶有親切感的舞曲經典。若問及在此Grunge和Hip-hop當道的時期，這位狄斯可女王的音樂還會有支持的群眾嗎？答案絕對是肯定的。
1996年末，Donna和幾位同儕巨星一同參與了一場由ABC電視網所主辦的慶祝狄士尼世界廿五週年的演唱會；之後，她也為狄士尼兒童專輯"Mouse House"演唱了動畫電影「鐘樓怪人」的主題曲。12月時，Donna和Bruce Roberts為席維斯史特龍所主演的電影「十萬火急（Daylight）」合唱了主題曲。
